Evaluation

For my project I wanted to create an animation that could let people reach into their childhood memories and familiarize themselves with their sibling scraps, the features of this animation were two young children often fighting about trivial things like who is not brushing their teeth when they are suppose to and who has had the TV remote for too long. I didn't really research much into what people would like in this animation because I had a pretty solid idea, but I did struggle in the first part of production, i.e, how will I start this animation, technique; Will I use Rotoscoping? will I do this free-hand?
After getting the story board drawn and the character designs set I then figured out how I would nail this project, but first I needed a title for this animation, through talking to people about this project and the matter of naming it I compiled a list of names into a Questionnaire poll asking people to vote on their favorite title for the brief, the name "Double Trouble" won, so that was the name that I had stuck with.

The timing for this project was rather late in the making by this point because no one was voting so I reached to desperate measures by sending the link to every possible person I knew and even didn't know and also included it on my blog, here people could watch both project briefs and the planning to know precisely what title they would like for this animation.

I started drawing my animation frame by frame for many many hours, often staying up all night to get as much done, once I had gotten so far into the animations, I decided that it should all be free hand. I did find some image references for back grounds,i.e, Sofa's, kitchens and living rooms.

When it came to experimenting for my animation I did not really need to do much apart from exploring different styles, in my blog, previously I experimented with doing a Photoshop sketchy sort of style but felt it would be too colorful as I wanted this animation to be limited to the few shades of Brown, the reason I wanted to do this is I wanted my animation to come across as some what "dated" but not in black and white.
I also experimented with movements both motion and style, Firstly I created a Rotoscope animation of a puppet moving around, I was very minimal with the line work and wanted it to be flickery and it proved to work well but not detailed enough for people to understand what is happening in the video if it was a story.
Secondly I experimented with another style and that was the Pop-art movement, I made a very colorful GIF of some ballet feet moving around and multiple colors happening around it I liked this but it was not right for the video I was aiming for, though pop art is a good and fashionable movement in the arts I still preferred the minimalism in my idea, finally the last experiment I did was a style inspired by the Ryan Woodward piece and this was a GIF of a man walking but he was creating some motion tracks behind him, I very much liked this idea because it was quite whimsical and I very much liked the idea of seeing movement subtly, though I didn't get the movement exactly like the artists, I am proud of what I had created on it's own and stuck by this idea.

Beginning research.

Below is the ideas of my final major project. This video expresses the inspirations behind my ideas and what I like about the ideas and designs that I have found.

Below is the second presentation that I did, this presentation is the one we are being marked on. It is not as brief as the first one because this one I have a clearer idea of what I wanted to create.

Inspirations

The following videos that have inspired my work vary in their styles from stop motion animation, to digital and traditional work.
I chose these animations because they are ones that I have liked for years prior to this project and will highly credit their efforts. I believe that all have helped me with my decisions regarding my final major project.

This video I like because it is very simplistic, though the process of making such a video is going to be very tedious. I like this video because it is very sweet I like the concept of it and I also very much like the music.
I like that it just two people in a bed, I also very much like the style that the woman is moving in because it is very fluent.. but it is very clear that she is just sleeping, as if she is the being a puppet but things like her head and hands are too tedious to control so they still tend to move freely.
I very much like the fact that colour in this video is obviously been controlled; it's not too cluttered and has been kept to more neutral colours like Beige, white, browns and different shades of black.

This video is one of the main contributions to the style that I very much like. I really like traditional animations because they are very deep and by that I mean that they are very subtle but things that involve emotion are some what hight lighted by thicker line work, I very much like simplicity because it is subtle in its major details. I like that it proves that "Less is more". I find that this video is very simple because there is literally three colours and they are all very neutral, I'm actually take quite a liking to videos of such colours and simplicity. And to be honest with this video, no more colours are really needed, there is a background, Person A and person B, and they are all highlighted well. I like this video because of the art style that it portrays, It is very much like drafted sketches, but it is very fluent and the shading is very minimal.
I especially like the way that the movement is portrayed, the artist exaggerates movement by stretching reality, he makeds fast movement into a solid image and he also makes it look magical by adding wisps of movement like a lit flame does.

This video is very inspirational, I think that the story line in this video is very lovable and sweet in it's own strange way. I find that the story line and the use of colour and style is what makes this video so successful.
The story line is mainly about love and redemption, I think that it is very lovable because the characters are young and show innocence, even the bad guy in this video is a cute little bunny rabbit with a 'unicorn' horn. I also like this because of the style of the characters I think that they are really cute and that also reinforces the story line. I like the way that emotion is portrayed in this too, with the colour of their faces and the attention brought to the little boy's ears, like when he shows his affected for 'little red riding hood' his face turns red and when he upsets the girl (riding hood), his ears floop down like a cats does when it is intimidated. I also very much like that this is another take on the classic story of "Little Red Riding Hood".
It's very evident that in this video the creators paid a LOT of attention to the colour, they have names the video "Red" and the entire video is in either red, white or other such colours that are tinted red, I've also noticed colours like black have been very minimal, I think that this is an effective way to keep the innocence of this video alive; when the bad guy turns evil there it is shown by his face slightly shading to black, I find that this is why Black has been kept very subtle in this video because black shows darkness and a sense of evil.

Though this is just a music video with no real story to it I like this very much because it is very surreal. I like how it explores a lot of different styles involved in animation. I also like the way it repeats every small detail over and over so that you can actually see this and get a good eye of what it is you are seeing having to think about it.
I really like how the movement goes with the beats of the music too.
I noticed that it is rather simple, just a white back ground with a lot of line drawings I think that this is effective in high lighting what the focus of the attention is, that being the pieces of ballet dancer.
I really like the montage of different movement and the simplicity of the skirt movement in part of the video, it is just a simple line drawing but it is very clear in what it actually is.
I think this video is not the best out of the ones I have researched, but I do count this as an influence to my ideas.

This is a fast paced action packed video about some of the cons and pros about Love. I like this and feel it's fast pace nature is the main inspiration to my piece.

Experimentation

This video is a rotoscoping of a video that I found on-line. On the web site Youtube. I really like the style that this video is in and really feel like this maybe the style I am going to stick with but I think I am also wanting to add a style to it also, Kinda like the red image down below where the movement is emphasised.

IF THIS GIF IS NOT MOVING WHEN THE PAGE LOADS, SCROLL YOUR MOUSE OVER IT.
The video above is an experimentation of some rotoscoping. I used this style because it is very similar to all of the videos I researched for this module.

The GIF image above is a frame by frame experimentation that I did of a clip from the film Bambi, here I am exploring the rough style of sketching, I have not included colour in every single frame and have learned that I do not need to.

IF THIS GIF IS NOT MOVING WHEN THE PAGE LOADS, SCROLL YOUR MOUSE OVER IT.

In the GIF image above it is evident that I have tried to inherit the style of movement from the video "Thought of you by Ryan Woodward", I think that I have done it as close to the style I can possibly get, I am rather proud of this piece because I feel that I have got it near enough right and really think I can pull this off in my animation. I really like the way that the movement is emphasised in this clip.

IF THIS GIF IS NOT MOVING WHEN THE PAGE LOADS, SCROLL YOUR MOUSE OVER IT.

With the GIF above expresses that I have experimented with some styles and colours.
I'm deciding what sort of colour theme that I want to go with. Because it is vital that I figure this out. I want it to be some what monotone. Using a very restricted amount of colour.

Lately I have been rather fond of Pop art styles and have decided I will experiment with it and how I would come across making something a pop-art style.

PROGRAM CHOICES

In future experimentation I will be trying out some animation techniques in After Effects as well as Flash because I maybe using the two. Since I have not really go a lot of experience in After affects, like I do in flash. I thought it would be a very good idea to do a lot of experimentation in Adobe After effects.

Project proposal

Animation is the idea for my final major project.
The artists that have inspired me to do this are:

Ryan Woodward and his ‘Thought of you’

Hayao Miyazaki and his collection of movies.

And Ub Iwerk and his Mickey Mouse image.

These artists have dedicated so much to the Animation industry and are greatly respected by me.

The idea that I have for my animation is a fast paced animation based on my own childhood.
The idea that I have so far is an animation of two kids creating trouble for one another  but both got the trouble every time, the two children were confused about this and realise later on that their parent had CCTV installed in their house.
The reason this is based on my own childhood is that my Dad actually had CCTV installed in his house as a perk of being an Ex-security guard, he always told us he had, but we never believed him until he showed us.

SOFTWARE: The software I will use will most likely be, Photoshop, After Effects, Flash and maybe some Audition. These aren’t for definite yet these are just possibilities.

SETTING: I think there will be no definitive setting just the two children getting up to mischief. I think there will be subtle locations like door frames and seats and things and also the odd other people when I am trying to portray a public area.
THEME:  I am trying to keep it very minimal and that is why I’m also using very minimal colours. I like minimalism and the style and that’s why I chose a minimalist approach. I’m also going to exaggerate movement because it is the one thing in animations that I very much look out for.
LOCATIONS: Not decided yet, I have thought of things my brother and I used to do to get one another in trouble as kids and they were always around the home or when we went out with our parents.

I want to create an animation about something I familiarise with in my childhood, I also added about there being CCTV in the experience as it was also something I familiarise with. When I was living with my Mum My brother and I always got each other into trouble and we’d always get away with it. ..  When times became tough for us growing up at my Mums, we went to live with our Dad who we weren’t so keen on because of some earlier strict memories and some stories told to us. When we lived there it was great, there was just one catch. If one of us got in trouble. We BOTH did. Till we found out our Dad had packed his house out with surveillance.
What I want to create with this animation is people laughing, people familiarising and people remembering their devious little ways as children.
I want to improve greatly on my animation skills in preparation for the future course I plan on taking I also want to learn the positives and the negatives about doing such work and want to throw myself in the deep end and challenge myself to see what I am capable of.

I guess can be aimed at little kids and preteens as long as there is a message at the end that displays a “Good” influential message, I.e ...  Actions have consequences. And also for older people because they can appreciate the memories or familiarise with it.
I think the aim really is to get a good laugh from people.
One of my passions in life has always been to get people laughing or smiling.

The contents of this animation will be mainly drawings and possibly some image manipulations. I plan on doing free hand animation and Rotoscoping. So there are some things that I need to scout, I.e, People to act out what I need them to and the safety precautions I need to take with that.  This animation will contain subtle glimpses of locations and features two children.

The three images in this frame are from three animations that have inspired me very much in this project. And from the images alone it is very clear how they take part in that inspiration.
1.Red- Film by Hunjoo Song this was made by a collection of people from what I assume attend Calarts.
2.Thought of you by Ryan Woodward, this is done by an animator who has also contributed so much to Animated TV.
3.Perils of Love (A Quoi Ca Sert L’amour) by Cube (Louis Clitchy).
These all play their roles in my inspiration.

I previously mentioned twice of the story about the two kids causing mischief for one another as my story.
I guess since this will be a collaboration of events there is no real “Getting there” scene, just cuts as this will be a some what fast paced animation.
That character(s) are in said location to get one another in trouble with the parent.

I guess this does have an originality to it because it’s me sharing a personal story with you in a comedic way, due to it’s pace and the movements that will be exaggerated there will be a lot of funny scenes in this. As my aim is to make the audience giggle.
I guess the humour and it’s odd colours will make this animation stand out because there are not very many animations that inherit this style. Also I find the idea to be rather quirky.
I think the locations will be interesting because they will be subtle, maybe partially blurred and faded but still giving off sign as to where they are vaguely.

I am looking to go for some natural and subtle colours. I think I want to add a slight tinge of other colours too, like for example water or things to be white or slightly blue just for added comedic value.

Colour is what I have very much thought about in this as it is also the style that I aim for. Which is partly the reason behind the colour of this presentation.

I’m not saying these palettes are what I am going to use specifically but along this colour range.  I have also experimented with a more wilder range of colours too.

Things I need to take into account when working with other people is their safely and well-being.
Also drawing for long periods of time can be rather strenuous to the hands, back and eyes so I need to take regular eye and hand breaks and stretch out regularly.

WEEK 1: Decisions and presenting.
WEEK 2: Experimentation and presentation.
WEEK 3: Presenting/Character design and story boarding.
WEEK 4: Gathering of materials I need, I.e, People, story boards, funding and comfortable seating for long periods of animating.
WEEK 5: Getting started, Animating,Pre production material, Sketches, Filmography, ect.
WEEK 6:Animation &/or Rotoscoping.
WEEK 7: Animation / Blog work. Final touches to animation & Blog work.
Through out the Planning, Production and Out-come of this project. I will keep a hand journal to document notes about the production, any issues I hit during production and my feelings towards this during .

For week one and two the initial plan is to start the animation and get as much of it done as possible. As this animation will be kept short.. but as long as I possibly can with the time that I have I do not think that this will be quite as difficult.

I've decided also that I will not really need very much materials for this as I have saved some animating time with such tools as the Tweening tool and the Bone tool that I have watched many tutorials about, I have not yet showed evidence of using this in my work yet because I have felt like I have not needed it.

I have got my animation started so far and have yet to incorporate the second character in this animation. It is very important that I get as much done as possible in the start so that I have plenty of time to tweek my project and perfect it.

Naming the animation

I'm making a, fast-paced action animation about two little kids causing trouble for one another, call it a compilation so to speak. ... The question I ask, Is: What name is more suited to this concept?

Double Trouble0%
Mischief0%
The Terrible Two0%
Trouble0%
Or any suggestions of your own could be a help.0%

I had finally come to the conclusion that I will be naming it double trouble because it was the answer that scored the highest in other mediums also, I.e.. I asked people who watched my presentation on youtube to also choose the name for this animation idea.
